Turf & Paver Patio Under the Oaks — Beaufort, SC

The centerpiece of this backyard was a beautiful, mature live oak — and that was exactly the design problem. Dense shade and a sprawling root system make it hard to grow grass or plant beds, and a narrow lot left little room to work. The family wanted a usable, good-looking yard that respected the tree instead of fighting it.

We built the whole layout around the oak. A circular paver tree-ring rings the trunk, protecting the root flare while giving the design a clean focal point. From there, herringbone paver patios and curving walkways flow out to a dining area near the house, with panels of artificial turf set between them for softness and green that does not depend on sunlight.

The turf was the right call for the conditions: it stays green in deep shade where real grass struggles, needs no mowing around the roots, and drains freely in Lowcountry downpours. Pavers and turf together gave the family a yard that looks intentional from every window above it.

A low-maintenance outdoor room that finally uses the whole footprint — patio, path, and lawn woven around the tree instead of crowded out by it. The oak stays the star, and the space underneath it is now something the family actually lives in.
