This wooded James Island property called for more than a single hardscape. We built a long, part-paver and part-gravel driveway that creates a finished approach to the home, then shaped a separate circular patio around a central fire pit, a substantial stone fireplace, and room for everyone to sit together.

The Project
The scale of this James Island property created two distinct design opportunities. The long drive needed to feel intentional from the road through the arrival at the house and three-car garage, while the outdoor living area needed a strong center and enough space for a larger group to gather comfortably.
Rather than forcing both needs into one material or one visual idea, the plan uses paver and gravel driveway sections for the property’s long approach and a completely separate circular composition for the patio.
Our Solution
The driveway’s paver sections establish clean edges and a durable finished surface through the key arrival and circulation areas. The layout widens naturally as it reaches the home, creating space to turn, park, and access the garage without losing the wooded character of the lot.
For the outdoor gathering area, we organized the pavers in concentric circular bands around a central stone fire pit. The rings make the patio feel balanced from every direction and give the chairs a natural place to land. Along one side, a large stone fireplace with extended seating walls creates a second focal point and adds built-in places to sit beside the hearth.
The Result
The finished project now works at both property scale and people scale. The long drive provides a composed approach to the home, while the patio creates an intimate outdoor room despite its generous size.
At the center, the fire pit brings the seating together. At the edge, the fireplace anchors the space against the trees. The result is a James Island hardscape that makes arriving home feel considered and gives family and friends a destination once they are there.
